A pictogram is a visually simple and quickly comprehensible image that helps provide information about a room or space.
When it comes to ADA signage, there are 3 pictogram categories to know.
Required
ON SIGNS THAT ASSIST PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
There are four pictograms in this category that are recognized worldwide by the ISO and required on signage that serves the disabled.
Recommended
ON COMMON SIGNS THAT IDENTIFY A ROOM
ADA standards recommend the use of pictograms on any sign that identifies permanent rooms and spaces such as a restroom.
Optional
ON ALL OTHER TYPES OF ROOM SIGNAGE
Pictograms are optional on all other signs, but can be extremely helpful to aid in quickly identifying a space or to reinforce policies.
